JPG is the safe choice for photographs. It throws away detail the eye does not miss, which keeps files small.

PNG keeps every pixel exactly. That makes it right for screenshots, diagrams and anything with sharp edges or text, and wasteful for photos, where a PNG can be five to ten times the size of a JPG.

WebP is a newer format that is typically a quarter to a third smaller than JPG at similar quality. Every current browser shows it, but some older apps and upload forms do not accept it.

The settings

Quality

High is close to indistinguishable from the original. Medium roughly halves the file and suits pictures for the web or email. Low is for when size matters most and some blur around edges is acceptable. PNG has no quality setting because it is always exact.

Size

Choosing a size shrinks any picture whose longer side is bigger than that number of pixels, and leaves smaller pictures alone. A phone photo is around 4000 pixels wide. 1920 is plenty for a screen and 1280 is enough for email or chat.

Good to know

  • Transparent areas turn white when converting to JPG, because JPG has no transparency.
  • Photos are turned the right way up. A phone stores a sideways photo with a note saying how to rotate it. The converted picture has the rotation applied.
  • Camera details are removed. The date, camera model and location stored inside a photo are not copied into the new file.
  • Animated GIFs become a still picture of their first frame.
  • HEIC photos from iPhones are supported on devices that can decode them. See HEIC to JPG.

Changing more than the format

Converting keeps the picture as it is and changes how it is stored. For other jobs there are separate tools:

  • Resize image sets an exact width and height in pixels, or a percentage.
  • Compress image brings a photo under a size limit such as 100 KB.
  • Crop image cuts a picture down to the part you want, in a set shape if you need one.
  • Rotate image turns or mirrors pictures.
  • Compress PNG shrinks screenshots and logos without leaving PNG.
  • PNG to ICO makes a favicon or a Windows icon.

To combine pictures into one document, use image to PDF.

Questions

How many pictures can I convert at once?

There is no set limit. They are converted one after another, so a few dozen phone photos is comfortable. With very large batches on a phone, convert in groups.

Does converting PNG to JPG reduce quality?

Slightly, because JPG is a lossy format. At High quality the change is very hard to see in a photo. For screenshots with small text, PNG stays sharper.

Will converting JPG to PNG improve the picture?

No. The PNG will be an exact copy of the JPG, flaws included, in a much larger file. Convert to PNG only if something specifically requires it.

Is the location removed from my photos?

Yes. The converted pictures do not contain the location, date or camera details that were stored in the originals.

Can I make a picture a specific file size?

Not directly. Lower the quality or choose a smaller size, check the result, and adjust. The result shows the total size so you can see the effect.
