Split PDF
Break a PDF into smaller files: one per page, the ranges you type, or equal parts.
How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.
How to split a PDF
- Tap Choose a PDF and pick the file.
- Choose how to split it: every page on its own, the ranges you type, or equal parts.
- Press Split PDF.
- Save the pieces one at a time, or press Save all as ZIP to get them together.
The three ways to split
| Choice | What you get | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| One file for every page | A 12 page PDF becomes 12 one-page PDFs | Scans of separate documents, forms that must be uploaded singly |
| The page ranges I type | 1-3, 4-10, 11 becomes three files | Cutting a report into chapters, pulling out one section |
| Equal parts | Every 2 pages, or every 5, as you choose | Double-sided scans, batches of invoices of the same length |
The PDF splitter treats every comma as the start of a new file when you type ranges. A range can run backwards, so 10-1 gives a file with the pages in reverse order, and a page may appear in more than one file.
How the files are named
The pieces take the name of the original with a number added: report-page-01.pdf, report-page-02.pdf for single pages, or report-part-1.pdf, report-part-2.pdf for ranges and equal parts. The numbers are padded with zeros so the files sort in the right order in any folder.
Split, extract or remove?
These three do related jobs, and picking the right one saves a step.
- Split when you want several files out of one.
- Extract PDF pages when you want one new file holding only the pages you name.
- Remove PDF pages when you want the same document with a few pages taken out.
Good to know
- Pages are copied, not redrawn. Text remains selectable and pictures keep their quality.
- Each piece carries only what its own pages need, so the pieces are usually much smaller than the whole.
- Bookmarks are not carried into the pieces.
- A PDF protected with a password or editing restrictions cannot be split until the protection is removed in the program that created it.
To put pieces back together, use merge PDF.
Questions
How do I split a PDF into single pages?
Choose One file for every page and press Split PDF. You get one PDF per page, and a ZIP with all of them.
Can I split a PDF in half?
Yes. Choose The page ranges I type and enter the two halves, for example 1-10, 11-20 for a 20 page file.
Why are some pieces larger than expected?
Pages that share a large picture or an embedded font each need their own copy of it once they are in separate files.
Can I split a scanned PDF?
Yes. A scan is a PDF whose pages are pictures, and it splits like any other.
Is there a page limit?
No fixed limit. Splitting into more than 500 files at once is refused, to keep the browser responsive.
