Audio converter
Convert an audio file to WAV or M4A, or save the sound from a video as its own file.
How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.
How to convert an audio file
- Tap Choose an audio or video file and pick the file.
- Choose the format to save as.
- To keep only part of it, type the From and To times.
- Press Convert, listen to the result, then save or share it.
Which format should I choose?
| Format | Size per minute | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| M4A | 1 to 2 MB | The source is a phone video or an M4A file. The sound is copied with no loss |
| WAV | About 10 MB in stereo | The sound is going into an editing app |
M4A holds AAC, the format phones record in, and it is only offered when the file already contains AAC, because then the sound can be copied without touching it. WAV is uncompressed. It is large, but editing apps open it instantly and can save it again and again without losing anything.
Files it can read
- Audio: MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, Opus and FLAC.
- Video: MP4, MOV, M4V, 3GP, MKV and WebM. The sound is taken out and the picture is ignored.
Formats outside this list, such as WMA, AIFF and AMR, may or may not open depending on your device.
Good to know
- Converting cannot add quality. A 128 kbps MP3 saved as WAV is a large file that sounds like a 128 kbps MP3.
- Surround sound is reduced to stereo when saving as MP3.
- Track names, artists and cover art are not carried over.
- Audio files other than those inside MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM are limited to 400 MB.
- Only convert audio you have the right to use. Converting a file does not change who owns it.
Questions
Which format has the best quality?
WAV and M4A both keep everything that is in your source file. WAV does it by storing the sound uncompressed, and M4A by copying the original AAC. MP3 re-compresses the sound, so it is very slightly behind, though at 192 kbps and above the difference is hard to hear.
Can I convert FLAC to MP3 or WAV?
To WAV, yes. FLAC is lossless, so the WAV is an exact copy of the recording.
Why is the M4A option greyed out?
M4A is offered only when the sound in your file is already AAC, so that it can be copied without re-encoding. For other files choose WAV.
Can I cut out part of a long recording?
Yes. Type the start and end under Part to save, for example 12:30 to 15:00, and only that section is converted.
Is there a limit on length?
Sound from MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM files is read a piece at a time, so hours-long recordings are fine. Other audio files are loaded whole and are limited to 400 MB.
