Video trimmer

Cut the start and end off a video. Fast cut keeps the original quality and finishes in about a second. Exact cut starts on the precise frame you choose.

How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.

How to trim a video

  1. Tap Choose a video and pick the file.
  2. Play the video to where the clip should begin and press Use video position under Start. Do the same for End. You can also drag the sliders or type the times.
  3. Leave Fast cut selected unless the clip has to begin on one particular frame.
  4. Press Cut video, check the result, then Save video or Share.

Fast cut and Exact cut

A video file does not store every frame as a complete picture. It stores a complete picture, called a keyframe, every second or two, and for the frames in between it stores only what changed. A player can only start from a keyframe.

Fast cut copies the frames you want into a new file without touching them. Because the copy has to begin on a keyframe, the clip can start up to a second or two earlier than the point you picked. The note under the settings tells you exactly where it will start. Nothing is re-encoded, so the picture and sound are identical to the original and the cut takes about a second, even for a long recording.

Exact cut decodes the video and encodes it again from the frame you chose. The start is precise, the quality is set high, and it takes longer because every frame is processed.

Good to know

  • Files it reads: MP4, MOV, M4V, 3GP, MKV and WebM. The clip is saved as MP4.
  • Fast cut works in every current browser.
  • Exact cut needs Chrome, Edge or another browser built on the same engine.
  • Rotation and sound are kept as they are in the original.
  • One section per cut. To keep two separate parts, cut twice and save two files.

Questions

Why does my clip start slightly earlier than I chose?

Fast cut has to begin on a keyframe, and the nearest one before your start may be a second or two earlier. Switch to Exact cut if the first frame matters.

Does trimming lower the quality?

Fast cut does not. The frames are copied, not re-encoded, so they are identical to the original. Exact cut re-encodes at a high quality setting, so there is a small loss that is hard to see.

Is there a size limit?

Fast cut handles long recordings of several gigabytes without trouble. Exact cut is heavier work, so on a phone keep exact cuts to a few minutes.

Can I remove a section from the middle?

Not in one step. Cut the part before it and the part after it as two clips. This tool does not join clips together.
