Crop image

Crop an image to keep only the part you want. Drag the frame over the picture, or type the exact size in pixels.

How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.

How to crop an image

  1. Tap Choose a picture. It appears with a frame over it.
  2. Drag the frame to where you want it, and drag its orange corner to make it larger or smaller.
  3. To force a shape, such as a square, choose it under Shape.
  4. Press Crop, then Save picture.

Shapes and where they are used

Choosing a shape locks the frame to it. You can still move the frame and change its size, but its proportions hold, so the result is exactly square, or exactly 16:9.

Cropping to exact pixels

The four boxes under the picture show the frame in the picture's own pixels: its width, its height, and how far it sits from the left and top edges. Type into them when you need a precise result, for example a region of 1200 × 630 starting 40 pixels from the top. The frame follows what you type, and the boxes follow the frame.

With the frame selected, the arrow keys move it one pixel at a time. Hold Shift to move ten. With its orange corner selected, the same keys change its size.

Cropping does not shrink or blur

A crop keeps the pixels inside the frame exactly as they are and discards the rest. Nothing is scaled, so the part you keep is as sharp as it was. The cropped picture is smaller only because it contains less.

That is the difference from resizing, which keeps the whole picture and changes how many pixels it has. The two are often used together: crop to the right shape first, then resize image to the exact size a site asks for.

Tips for a better crop

  • Leave room in the direction of travel. A person looking or moving left wants space on the left.
  • Keep eyes in the upper third for portraits and profile pictures.
  • Check circular previews. Many sites show a square profile picture inside a circle, which cuts the corners. Keep the face well inside the frame.
  • Straighten first. If the picture is sideways, use rotate image before cropping.

The cropped picture is saved in the same format as the original unless you choose another, with -cropped added to the name. The original file is not changed.

Questions

How do I crop a picture into a square?

Choose Square, 1:1 under Shape. The frame becomes square. Move and size it, then press Crop.

Can I crop to an exact size in pixels?

Yes. Type the width and height in the boxes under the picture. To end up at a size larger or smaller than the area you select, crop first and resize afterwards.

Does cropping reduce quality?

The pixels you keep are not changed. A JPG is saved again at high quality, which has no visible effect.

Can I crop a circle?

No. Pictures are rectangles. Crop a square and the site that shows it as a circle will do the rest.

Can I crop several pictures at once?

No. Each picture needs its own frame, so they are cropped one at a time.
