AVIF to JPG
Convert AVIF to JPG when a picture saved from the web or taken on a newer phone will not open where you need it.
How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.
How to convert AVIF to JPG
- Tap Choose AVIF files and select one or more files.
- Leave the quality on High for the closest match to the AVIF.
- Press Convert to JPG, then save the picture, or all of them as one ZIP.
What AVIF is
AVIF is a picture format released in 2019. It borrows its compression from the AV1 video standard and is, at present, about the most efficient way to store a photograph: often half the size of a JPG that looks the same. Streaming services, shops and news sites use it to speed up their pages, and some recent Android phones can save photos in it.
Being new is its weakness. Outside web browsers, support is patchy.
| Where | Opens AVIF? |
|---|---|
| Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari (current versions) | Yes |
| Windows Photos | May need an extension installed |
| Older Photoshop, Office, image viewers | Often not |
| Upload forms for listings, IDs, applications | Rarely |
| Printers, kiosks, TVs, digital frames | Rarely |
JPG opens in all of those, which is the reason to convert.
What you gain and give up
- Gain: a file that works everywhere, at the same size in pixels.
- Give up some efficiency. The JPG is usually two to three times the size of the AVIF. Medium quality narrows the gap.
- Give up transparency. AVIF can have a see-through background. JPG cannot, so it becomes white. Change the format to PNG before converting if you need to keep it.
- Give up extended colour. Some AVIF pictures carry high dynamic range or a wider colour range than JPG holds. They are brought into the standard range, which can make very bright highlights look a little flatter.
Animated AVIF
AVIF can hold an animation, used as a modern replacement for GIF. Converting gives a still JPG of the first frame.
Your browser does the reading
Opening an AVIF relies on the browser. Chrome has read AVIF since 2020, Firefox since 2021, and Safari since late 2022. If the page reports that the picture could not be opened, update the browser or try another one.

Questions
How do I open an AVIF file?
Any current browser shows it. For programs that do not, convert it to JPG here.
Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
Slightly, since both formats approximate detail. At High quality the pictures look the same.
Why is the JPG so much bigger?
AVIF compresses roughly twice as well as JPG, so the same picture needs more room as a JPG.
Can I convert AVIF to PNG?
Yes. Change the Convert to setting to PNG before converting. Transparency is kept that way.
The page says the picture could not be opened. Why?
Your browser is too old to read AVIF. Update it, or use a current version of Chrome, Firefox or Edge.
