WebP to JPG

Convert WebP to JPG when a picture saved from a website will not open, attach or upload.

How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.

How to convert WebP to JPG

  1. Tap Choose WebP files and select one or more files.
  2. Keep the quality on High, so as little as possible is lost in the change.
  3. Press Convert to JPG, then save the picture, or all of them as one ZIP.

Why pictures arrive as WebP

WebP is a format Google introduced in 2010 to make web pages load faster. A WebP is usually a quarter to a third smaller than a JPG that looks the same, so many websites now serve all their pictures that way. Save a picture from such a site and you get a .webp file, whether you wanted one or not.

Browsers show WebP without trouble. The problems start elsewhere:

  • Older versions of Photoshop, Office and Windows Photo Viewer cannot open it.
  • Many upload forms and marketplaces list JPG and PNG only and reject it.
  • Some printers, photo kiosks, TVs and digital frames do not recognise it.
  • Email programs may show it as an attachment and not as a picture.

A JPG avoids all of that.

What the conversion changes

Picture size in pixelsAs savedThe same
Transparent backgroundPossibleBecomes white
AnimationPossibleFirst frame only
File sizeSmallerOften 25 to 50% larger at High quality
Opens everywhereNot quiteYes

Both formats approximate detail, each in its own way, so going from one to the other costs a small amount of quality. At High it is hard to see. Avoid converting back and forth more than once.

If the WebP has a transparent background

Stickers, logos and product cut-outs are often WebP with transparency. As JPG they get a white background. To keep the transparency, use WebP to PNG.

Saving a JPG in the first place

Some sites offer the original file if you open the picture in its own tab or use a download button, not “Save image as”. Where that is not possible, converting afterwards is the simple route. To go the other way for your own website, see JPG to WebP.

Questions

How do I open a WebP file?

Any current browser opens it. To use it in programs that do not, convert it to JPG here.

Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?

Very slightly. At High quality the result looks the same as the WebP.

Why is the JPG larger than the WebP?

WebP compresses more efficiently. The same picture needs more space as a JPG. Choose Medium quality for a smaller file.

What happens to an animated WebP?

Its first frame is saved as a still JPG. JPG cannot hold animation.

Can I stop my browser saving pictures as WebP?

Not reliably. The website decides which format to send. Converting the saved file is the dependable fix.
