How to convert WebP to PNG

Transparency, including soft edges

WebP and PNG both store transparency per pixel, with 256 levels from fully clear to fully solid. The conversion carries all of them across, so soft shadows, glows and smooth anti-aliased edges look the same on any background colour. Nothing is flattened onto white.

Quality

The WebP is opened and its pixels are written into the PNG exactly. PNG adds no loss of its own. If the WebP was saved with lossy compression, which most are, the small imperfections it already had are preserved along with everything else. They are not made worse.

File size

Expect the PNG to be larger, sometimes several times larger. WebP is one of the most efficient formats in use, and PNG trades size for exactness. For flat artwork, the difference is modest. For photographic content it is large.

If the PNG is too heavy, run it through compress PNG, which keeps the transparency and commonly halves the size.

Animated WebP

An animated WebP, the kind used for moving stickers, converts as its first frame only. PNG as written here is a still picture.

Using the PNG

PNG is accepted by practically every design tool, presentation program, sticker maker and print service. If the destination is a website favicon, PNG to ICO takes the PNG from here. For photographs, WebP to JPG gives a much smaller file.

Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes, including partly see-through pixels such as soft shadows and smooth edges.

Is any quality lost?

No. The pixels of the WebP are stored exactly in the PNG.

Why is the PNG bigger than the WebP?

PNG stores pixels without loss, which takes more room than WebP needs. That is expected.

Should I pick PNG or JPG for a photo?

JPG. A photo as PNG is very large for no visible benefit. PNG is for transparency, sharp graphics and editing.

Can it convert an animated WebP?

Only its first frame, as a still picture.
