JFIF to JPG

Convert JFIF to JPG so the picture is accepted everywhere. Nothing about the picture itself is changed.

How the files you choose are handled is set out in the privacy policy.

How to convert JFIF to JPG

  1. Tap Choose JFIF files and select one or more files.
  2. Leave the size on Original size, so the picture is passed through untouched.
  3. Press Convert to JPG, then save the picture, or all of them as one ZIP.

A JFIF file is a JPEG

JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is the name of the standard that describes how a JPEG picture is laid out in a file. Files ending .jpg follow the same layout or a close relative of it. The ending .jfif is just a rarely used label for the same kind of file.

EndingWhat is inside
.jpgA JPEG picture
.jpegA JPEG picture
.jfifA JPEG picture
.jpe, .jif, .jfiA JPEG picture

So why will it not upload?

Because many programs and websites decide what a file is by its name, not by its contents. An upload form that allows “.jpg, .jpeg, .png” turns away a .jfif without ever looking inside. Some editors and photo printers do the same. Give the same picture the ending .jpg and it is accepted.

What this page does

It checks that the file really is a JPEG and then saves it under a .jpg name. With the size left on Original size, the picture data is passed through byte for byte. It is not opened, redrawn or compressed again, so there is no loss of quality whatsoever, and the file size stays the same. The result tells you when this has happened.

If you choose a smaller size, or a different format, the picture is converted in the ordinary way.

Why Windows saves pictures as JFIF

This catches many people out. On some Windows 10 and 11 computers, choosing “Save image as” in Chrome or Edge offers .jfif where you would expect .jpg. The cause is a setting in the Windows registry that tells programs which ending to suggest for JPEG pictures. A Windows update changed it on many machines.

The browser is not doing anything wrong, and the picture is fine. It just has an unhelpful name.

Doing it by hand

On a single file, renaming works too: change the ending from .jfif to .jpg and confirm the warning. Windows hides file endings by default, so you may first have to turn on File name extensions in the View menu of File Explorer. This page is quicker for a batch, and it also confirms each file really is a JPEG before renaming it.

To make the pictures smaller afterwards, use compress image. To turn them into PNG, use JPG to PNG.

Questions

Is JFIF the same as JPG?

Yes. A .jfif file contains an ordinary JPEG picture. Only the ending of the name is different.

Does converting JFIF to JPG lose quality?

No. With the size left on Original size, the picture data is copied unchanged and only the name is new.

Why does my computer save pictures as JFIF?

A Windows setting tells browsers to suggest .jfif for JPEG pictures. It is harmless but inconvenient.

Can I just rename the file?

Yes. Changing .jfif to .jpg by hand has the same effect for a single file.

Can I convert many JFIF files at once?

Yes. Choose them together and save them all as one ZIP.
