The factors for pounds, feet, inches, miles and gallons are exact, because those units are legally defined in terms of metric ones.

Temperature works differently

Most units convert by multiplying. Temperature scales also start in different places, so there is an addition as well.

  • Celsius to Fahrenheit: multiply by 9, divide by 5, add 32. So 20 °C is 68 °F.
  • Fahrenheit to Celsius: subtract 32, multiply by 5, divide by 9. So 98.6 °F is 37 °C.
  • Celsius to kelvin: add 273.15.

The two scales meet at one point: −40 °C is −40 °F.

US and UK measures are not the same

Gallons, pints and tons have different sizes on each side of the Atlantic, which is a common source of mistakes in recipes and fuel figures.

A metric tonne is 1,000 kg, which is different again. The converter lists each version separately so you can choose the right one.

Megabytes and mebibytes

Storage is sold in decimal units, where a gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Some operating systems count in binary units, where a gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes, and still label them GB. That is why a “500 GB” drive shows as about 465 GB on some computers. Both sets of units are in the converter.

How accurate are the results?

The conversion factors are the exact legal definitions where one exists. Answers are shown to six significant figures, which is more precise than most measurements.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Why are there two kinds of gallon?

The United States and the United Kingdom standardised their gallons differently in the 1800s. The US gallon is 3.785 liters and the UK gallon is 4.546 liters.

What is the difference between a ton and a tonne?

A tonne is the metric unit, 1,000 kg. A US ton is 2,000 lb, or about 907 kg. A UK ton is 2,240 lb, or about 1,016 kg.

How many kilometers are in a mile?

1.609344 km exactly.
