Celsius to Fahrenheit

To convert degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 and add 32. Type a temperature to see it in degrees Fahrenheit.

77 °F

How to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32

For example, 25 °C is 77 °F. Both scales are defined from the same fixed points, so the formula is exact. A change of one Celsius degree equals a change of 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees, and the two scales are offset by 32 at the freezing point of water.

A quick way to do it in your head

Double it and add 30.

  • 10 °C: 20 + 30 = 50 °F. The true answer is 50 °F.
  • 20 °C: 40 + 30 = 70 °F. The true answer is 68 °F.
  • 30 °C: 60 + 30 = 90 °F. The true answer is 86 °F.

The shortcut is spot on at 10 °C and drifts as you move away from it: 4 degrees high at 30 °C and 2 degrees low at 0 °C. It is good for weather, and not good enough for cooking or medicine.

At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?

At −40. Minus 40 °C and minus 40 °F are the same temperature.

Why do you add 32?

Because the Fahrenheit scale puts the freezing point of water at 32, where the Celsius scale puts it at 0. The 9/5 allows for the different size of the degrees, and the 32 allows for the different starting point.

Is centigrade the same as Celsius?

Yes. Centigrade is the older name for the Celsius scale.
